Children's toys that do not comply with EU market regulations can pose a major risk to children's health and safety. The risks range from small parts that can be swallowed to choking and poisoning hazards, hearing damage and even cuts.
During the campaign period at the end of 2024 and beginning of 2025, the BAVG inspected a total of 21 samples, which were pre-sorted by customs officers. Toys made of wood, dolls, puzzles, etc. were checked for correct labelling. Three shipments from China and the USA had to be stopped due to labelling errors (missing CE marking) or missing instructions for use and safety in German or the absence of the manufacturer's name.
Overall, participation in the international operation was a great success for customs in the fight against product piracy. During the operation period, a total of 703 declaration items were identified in 536 import customs clearances. The counterfeit toys came exclusively from China - see BMF/Customs press release.
